It's St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all my loyal readers (and to you faithless bastards as well).

Interesting fact: Because this St. Patrick's Day falls on a Roman Catholic religious day requiring abstinence from meat, and the traditional St. Pat's day meal is corned beef, the High Pope on his throne in Rome has granted a dispensation. All you papists can eat meat today.

As you can see St. Patrick liked meat. The picture at the right is an early 4th century Byzantine fresco titled, "St. Patrick selects his dinner".

Another St. Patrick's day fact:
Uisce Beatha (ish keh ba ha)
is a Gaelic term. Transliterated, it means " Water of Life,"
but in usage it means a distilled liquor, indigenous to the
Celtic nations of Ireland and Scotland. The English
mispronunciation, "whiskey" is more familiar to most.

I'll leave you with my favorite quote from St. Patrick.
"I drink to all who wish me well; may all my enemies go to hell."
(OK, he didn't really say that, but if he had known then what we know now, he would have.)

  1. My husband had a dark green T-shirt he would wear every March 17th, it read on the front: "Patrick was a Saint...I Ain't"
    Always loved that shirt!
A Happy St. Paddy's to one & all!

  2. This papist may have a special dispensation to eat meat, but he still isn't gonna do it. Don't like corned beef that much anyway. Oh, and greetings from a fellow Nawth Carolinian!

  3. I don't think that the High Pope ordered you to eat meat. He just said you could. So either way you're OK.

BTY, there's other kinds of meat than corned beef (which does suck). You could have roasted venison with steamed veggies and garlic mashed potatos. Or you could have a large bacon cheeseburger from a place like Cheeseburgers in Paridise or Hooters. Or you could have a 9oz fillet with lobster tail from your local Outback. You could even go to one of our fine NC local restaurants and have a large plate of fried chicken with french fries.

I have to go and eat now. Suddenly I'm hungry.
