D-Day

What with all the people having fun with the fact that the date today is 6/6/06 I think it would be a good idea to remind ourselves what is really significant about this date.

Here Gen. Eisenhower speaks with troops of the 101st Airborne before they board the planes for the nighttime drop into France. Their mission was to disrupt communications and transportation behind the German lines in support of the invasion.

It was feared that casualties would be as high as 70% among the paratroopers.

Here we see ships loaded with soldiers and equipment crossing the English Channel on their way to Normandy.

Many of the ships are towing barrage balloons to defend against the Luftwaffe.

American fighting men packed into a landing craft watch the approaching beach.

From the boat to the beach was the time of greatest risk.

For some it ended there, on the beach.

If you are a veteran of WWII the world owes you a debt that it can never repay. What you did, the effort you made, the pain you suffered, the blood you spilled literally saved civilization.

Thanks to you and your comrades in arms there is freedom and hope alive in the world. God bless you and thank you.
