More on SDI

Major Mike made a point in the comments to my post on SDI that needs to be further explored. He noted that because we are already more technologically advanced than rogue states like North Korea and Iran that we start off with an advantage in any arms race.

This it very true. Keep in mind that to us the technology that the little pot-bellied dictator in North Korea is attempting to master (without too much success it seems) is fifty years old. Just think of it. Problems we solved while Ike was still in the White House are what NK is working on today, and they still haven't gotten it worked out yet.

The Red Chinese have only managed to develop an ICBM in the last few years and that was only with the help of some corrupt FOB's* in the US. The Soviets looked at trying to cope with an ABM system and folded up like a house of cards. The Chinese, while they have just about managed to corner the world market on the kind of house wares you find in the local Wal Mart, are decades behind us in research and development.

If the US goes full out on the development of an ABM system we will push our lead out for decades to come.

If in the end the ICBM becomes as obsolete as sabers and flintlock muskets will anyone really miss them?

*FOB's = Friends Of Bill (Clinton). It was only with the help of an American aerospace company that was a major financial backer of former President Clinton that the ChiComs were able to correct problems with their launch vehicles.
