I got a call Saturday afternoon from a polling firm doing a poll on how I planed to vote. They asked me if I could take about five minutes. I agreed and the first question dealt with who I was going to vote for in a statewide race. I told the caller that I was voting for the Republican. She asked me if it was Republican all the way and I told her that is was. She then asked me what I thought the most important issue was. I told her national security. She thanked me and hung up. Elapsed time about 45 seconds.
Pollers know that calling on a weekend, especially a Saturday afternoon will yield a result skewed heavily toward Democrats because Republicans tend not to be home on weekends. The fact that she lost all interest in talking to me when I indicated that I was a Republican is another indicator of what was happening.
Clearly this poll was being cooked. Look for polls to be reported in the mainstream media on Monday which will claim to show that the public has tilted heavily toward the Democrats and away from Republicans. This is being done to demoralize GOP voters and suppress Republican voter turnout.
This indicates that Democrats are not nearly as confidant as they would like us to believe. As I said in the post below, we are winning. The left knows that it cannot get elected by presenting an honest picture of their beliefs to the public. Every time liberals run in a national election as liberals they get their heads handed to them. Just think McGovern, Carter's second campaign, Dukakis and Mondale.
The left knows that its only hope of winning is to either lie about what they plan to do once they gain power or smear their opponents with a campaign of lies and political dirty tricks, or both.
Given the legitimate disappointment which many Republican voters feel and the lack of "big picture" thinking which most Americans apply to politics it is possible that Democrats will retake the House this November. However the Democrats are aware of the fact that Republican voters are angry at elected Republicans for acting like Democrats. The Democrats cannot very well make their campaign slogan, "vote for us and we'll be even worse than the Republicans" so they need something to hang their campaign on which will distract disaffected Republican voters from the fact that the race is between the party which will give them at least some of what they want some of the time and the party that will give them everything that they hate all the time.
Enter Mark Foley, a sad aging homosexual man whose over friendliness with congressional pages, at least the male ones, may have opened his country to its most serious political disaster since the Carter Administration.
In the current election cycle the left believes that the Foley "scandal" will be their margin of victory. The house is so closely divided now that a turnover of just 3.5% of the seats would give the Democrats control. Republicans have angered their base by excessive spending and the high profile position that a handful of GOP (in name only) Senators have taken in support of amnesty for illegal aliens and a "guest worker" program that would have the effect of opening the border to as many as 50 million uneducated, unskilled and desperately poor immigrants (not to mention the possibility that Mexico would empty out its prisons and mental hospitals and dump the inmates on us like Castro did).
It is clearly the Democrat Party's hope that the Foley affair will be the distraction that they need to get enough voters to stop paying attention to the real issues and vote against the national interest by pulling the lever next to the picture of the donkey.
My gut tells me that they are wrong, but only time will tell.
