From The New York Post:
February 20, 2007 -- Immigrant-rights activists yesterday renewed their push to allow legal noncitizens to vote in the Big Apple.
A bill that would grant permanent residents and other legal immigrants the right to vote in municipal elections has been stalled in the City Council since last year.
"More than 50,000 adult noncitizen taxpayers in those two districts are disenfranchised by citizenship voting laws," said Cheryl Wertz, of New Immigrant Community Empowerment, referring to today's special election for council seats in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
The reason why non-citizens, even those here legally, are not allowed to vote goes to where their loyalties rest. If they held primary loyalty to America then they would go through the not particularly difficult process of becoming American citizens.
That they do not indicates that their allegiance remains with their nation of origin.
It is true that not every American citizen who votes has America's best interest at heart, after all look at how many people vote Democrat, but at least we can weed out a group who we know has no loyalty to the US.
I go into this because the grievance industry has decided that the only possible reason to not allow the citizens of other nations the right to participate in US elections is racism.
