The trend lines demonstrate that the majority of the support which McCain and Romney were receiving was simply due to the fact that neither of them was Rudolph Giuliani. When a real conservative choice was given to Republican voters support for McCain and Romney collapsed (it also didn't hurt that McCain self-destructed over support for the amnesty bill).
As you can see Julie Annie hit his peak last month and is consistently trending down while Thompson is consistently trending up. This reflects both increasing public awareness of Thompson and the increasing certainty that he will officially enter the race.
