On this day the world changed

Today marks 62 years since the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This did not end the war. It took another atomic bomb to force the Emperor to surrender and even then there was an attempted coup by the Japanese Army to prevent the surrender from being broadcast.

The bombing saved a great many lives because an invasion of the Japanese home islands would have forced us to kill millions. Even the Japanese schoolgirls were taught to make babmboo spears and rush the beaches whith the goal of killing an American soldier before being killed themselves.

Without the threat of atomic warfare the United States and the USSR would have fought another world war, probably beginning in 1964.
