Today marks 62 years since the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This did not end the war. It took another atomic bomb to force the Emperor to surrender and even then there was an attempted coup by the Japanese Army to prevent the surrender from being broadcast.
Here is a video of the actual Hiroshima detonation:
Here is a mini-documentary about the bombing of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The bombing saved a great many lives because an invasion of the Japanese home islands would have forced us to kill millions. Even the Japanese schoolgirls were taught to make babmboo spears and rush the beaches whith the goal of killing an American soldier before being killed themselves.
Without the threat of atomic warfare the United States and the USSR would have fought another world war, probably beginning in 1964.
UPDATE:
Did you know that all the Jooos in Hiroshima got a phone call the day before warning them to get out of the city?
