I've been looking for a video of this song to post for a good long time. This is Both Sides the Tweed, performed here by the Irish duo Leiheidi. It is about the 1707 union of England and Scotalnd which saw the end of Scotland as an independant kingdom. Technically it also saw the end of the independant kingdom of England and in the place of the seperate kingdoms formed the United Kingdom of Great Britian.
However in practice Scotland's tiny parlementary delagation was swallowed up by the vastly larger number of English MP's and they held no effective power.
Over time the union did bring numerous economic advantages to the Scots, however they also made possible the notorious Highland Clearances.
