There is a grey area between the time to talk and the time to shoot and the best thing to fill that space is pepper spray. OC (for Oleoresin Capsicum) is a non-lethal chemical agent which irritates the eyes, throat and nasal passages causing temporary blindness and difficulty breathing as well as severe pain. There are reports that in a very small number of cases death has resulted from its use, but in every case I'm aware of a preexisting condition such as a bad heart was present.
In any case the 14 deaths supposedly documented by the ACLU are a minuscule fraction of the total number of people upon which pepper spray had been used.
In evaluating the effectiveness of pepper spray the manufacturers of inferior and marginally effective products such as Pepper Mace (TM) wish you to believe that the percentage of OC in the spray is the determinative factor.
It is not.
The true judge of a pepper spray is the Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of the spray. The Scoville scale has a Jalapeño Pepper at 2500 to 8000 SHU and the Fox Labs pepper spray is 5.3 million SHU. That 5.3 million is the strongest SHU available in a pepper spray available on either the government/military or civilian market.
This is why I recommend the Fox Labs spray. If you are looking for a less than lethal weapon either because you live in one of the areas of the nation which deny citizens their constitutional right to carry firearms or because you want to plug the "grey area" where firearms might not be fully justified you cannot do better than Fox Labs pepper spray. (go here to order)
By the way Amazon.com (with whom I have a financial relationship) does not sell Fox Labs product. That is why I am not linking to any of the inferior pepper sprays they offer.
Fox Labs pepper spray would make an excellent stocking stuffer for anyone such as a college student who is prohibited from carrying a handgun. Also anyone who might work a night shift and need to go to their car or wait for public transportation after dark would benifit from the added safety of pepper spray.
