On this date in 2002, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was first recorded in Guangdong, China. The first victim was a farmer who died soon after being taken to hospital. As the disease spread, the Chinese government failed to notify the World Health Organisation and restricted media coverage of the epidemic. SARS went on to claim 774 lives worldwide.
