Fred Thompson came in third with 16% of the vote. He had said that he need to do "very well" in SC in order to stay in the race. I don't know whether a third place finish with less than 20% of the vote is what he would consider "very well".
I will say this, his speech, given earlier than any of the other candidates so that he could go put his children to bed, sounded like a farewell.
If Thompson does leave the race I will be sad. He was the only man in the race who had consistent conservative credentials going back decades. I do not understand how South Carolina's Republicans can favor a man who authored the amnesty bill, along with Ted Kennedy [spit] which the people of South Carolina hated.
I fear that the GOP is dead.
