Spitzer finally does the right thing

From The New York Times:

Gov. Eliot Spitzer, reeling from revelations that he had been a client of a prostitution ring, will resign today, some of his staff members said they have been told. Mr. Spitzer is scheduled to speak today at 11:30 a.m. at his Manhattan office, a top aide said.

Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson would then be sworn in to replace him in Albany.

But because even Mr. Spitzer’s most senior aides have been so surprised by revelations of their boss’s behavior, they said that they cannot be certain about a resignation until Mr. Spitzer makes it official.

In the two days since news of Mr. Spitzer’s involvement in the prostitution ring surfaced, he has been engaged in an intense legal and family debate about whether to resign or, as aides said his wife was urging, to stay on. Mr. Spitzer did not emerge from his apartment at Fifth Avenue and 79th Street in Manhattan on Tuesday, as Albany remained roiled and riveted by the deepening crisis.

The day began with anticipation that the departure of Mr. Spitzer, a first-term Democrat, was imminent and that Mr. Paterson would assume his job. But it ended with the New York political world in a suspended state, as cries — even from fellow Democrats — grew louder for the governor to step down. Several aides said they expected him to resign on Wednesday, but none knew for certain what would happen.

According to aides, the governor also contemplated the possibility of impeachment charges and the legal ramifications of not resigning. But he was faced with little support among Democrats in the Legislature, with whom he has had an often contentious relationship.

“An impeachment proceeding would force Democrats to either abandon him or defend him,” said one leading Democrat. “They would abandon him.”

Well, we think he's going to do the right thing.

One of the saddest things about this whole affair is the way that people are calling it a "tragedy". It is not a tragedy for anyone other than Mr. Spitzer's family. For everyone else it is, or should be, a case of justice finally finding a truly wretched and despicable man.

There are two things about Spitzer that everyone should know. One is that as a prosecutor he made a name for himself by destroying the lives of completely innocent people on Wall St. (just like another douche-bag prosecutor named Rudolph Giuliani). Let me say this again, Spitzer reached the heights of political power in New York by climbing upon the bodies of people who were doing absolutely no harm to anyone.

The fact that so many people, even NY state Republicans, are mourning the downfall of this bucket of raw sewage is a striking evidence of the moral leprosy which infects the nation's political class.

The other thing you need to know is that on more than one occasion he insisted on prosecuting the customers of prostitution operations. He did this while he was "customer #9". There are few things more detestable in a public official than hypocrisy and as he judged others so it should be done unto him.

It has been said that one of the reasons Spitzer hasn't resigned yet is because he is using that as a chip in his negotiations with federal prosecutors. He is desperately attempting to avoid pleading guilty to a felony so that he can keep his law license. That should not be an option for him. He ruined others who were innocent now let him be ruined in return.
