There is no tape of Michelle Obama ranting about "Whitey"

Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday batted down rumors circulating on the Internet and mentioned on some cable news shows of the existence of a video of his wife using a derogatory term for white people, and criticized a reporter for asking him about the rumor, which has not a shred of evidence to support it.

“We have seen this before. There is dirt and lies that are circulated in e-mails and they pump them out long enough until finally you, a mainstream reporter, asks me about it,” Obama said to the McClatchy reporter during a press conference aboard his campaign plane. “That gives legs to the story. If somebody has evidence that myself or Michelle or anybody has said something inappropriate, let them do it.”

I first heard about the supposed tape when Sean Hannity mentioned on his radio show that he had been identified as the one who held the tape. He said that he had been getting calls from the Clinton, Obama and McCain campaigns about it. Hannity denied having such a tape or even having heard it played for him.

David Weigel of Reason Magazine has now shot down the rumor in what I would consider a definitive way so I'm glad I didn't get sucked into the whole sideshow. However I have a question for all of you.

What exactly was there that was unbelievable about the idea that Michelle Obama might have been caught on tape ranting about "Whitey" and all of the United States of White America's misdeeds and crimes against Africa and black people in general?

Mrs. Obama is, after all, the one who has said that America is a downright mean country and that she has never felt proud of the US in her whole adult life, until it started to look like Barack might become the next president.

Remember when Obama first began to distance himself from Jeremiah Wright? Michelle would not join Barack in making any statement critical of Wright and she clearly resented the fact that Mr. Obama was having to repudiate Wright's statements.

It is clear that Mrs. Obama is just as much a hater of the white race and the United States of America as Jeremiah Wright is. The only difference between them is that apparently she was smart enough not to be recorded spewing that hate in such a direct manner.
