Some people have speculated that Obama's victory means that the nation has deliberately chosen to take a turn to the left. That we are no longer a center-right nation but have become center-left or maybe even just left in our outlook.
I do not believe this to be true for several reasons. One is that Obama made his signature issue tax cuts. Exit polls showed that 58% of the electorate believed that Obama would cut their taxes. This does not indicate a population which is desiring a shift to the left.
Second the Wall Street Journal has an article today about how voters in various places voted against a number of environmentalist wacko ballot measures. The left has hung many of its hopes of robbing Americans of their wealth and freedom on environmentalism. Its rejection by voters does not indicate a nation eager to lurch to the left.
Then we have voters in Arizona rejecting a ballot measure which would have made it easier for employers to hire illegal aliens and voters in California approving a constitutional amendment to outlaw gay marriage.
Again not signs that the electorate is swinging leftward.
In the end what happened Tuesday was that Obama, with the help of a media which was totally in the tank for him, was able to convince voters that he was a moderate Democrat in the Bill Clinton mold who would cut their taxes and bring back the prosperity of the 90's while healing the nation's racial divisions.
Not a shift to the left, just proof that you really can "fool all of the people some of the time".
