HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Sen. Barack Obama told a church convention Saturday that some right- wing evangelical leaders have exploited and politicized religious beliefs in an effort to sow division. "Somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked," the Democratic presidential candidate said in remarks prepared for delivery before the national meeting of the United Church of Christ.
"Part of it's because of the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, who've been all too eager to exploit what divides us," the Illinois senator said.
The "hijacking" was done by people who forgot that the point of the Bible was to teach men about their lost condition and to point the way toward God. The unity commanded by scripture is that of "one Lord, one faith, one baptism". It is a unity built upon a common adherence to sound doctrine. Those who are fracturing that unity are the ones who seek the praise of men rather than the praise of God by cherry-picking those parts of the Bible which fit in with modern materialist politically correct thought and "reinterpreting", minimizing, explaining away or simply ignoring those parts which they find embarrassing.
"At every opportunity, they've told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design," according to an advance copy of his speech.
Is Mr. Obama seriously implying that Democrats respect Biblical values like "abortion is murder", "homosexual acts are sin", "sex outside of marriage is sin", "marriage is between one man and one woman and is for life", "capital punishment is not only allowed by God but actually commanded by Him" and "If anyone will not work he shall not eat - meaning no welfare for the able-bodied"? Is he seriously implying that Democrats like real Christian churches (rather than politically correct socialist organizations that call themselves churches). I'll wait if you want to open another window and Google the name Jerry Falwell if you want to see what the left thinks of real Christians.
"There was even a time when the Christian Coalition determined that its number one legislative priority was tax cuts for the rich," Obama said. "I don't know what Bible they're reading, but it doesn't jibe with my version."
Let me translate libealspeak into plain English: "Tax cuts for the rich" means letting the people who actually provide jobs keep more of the money they produce so that they can provide even more jobs and letting Middle Class families spend their money on things they think are important rather than letting the government take it by threat of force and spend it the way that left-liberal "elites" like B. Hussein Obama and Mrs. Bill Clinton think are important.
I genuinely feel sorry for Mr. Obama if he feels that theft under color of authority is a Christian value.
Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ, a church of about 1.2 million members that is considered one the most liberal of the mainline Protestant groups.
This says it all. The UCC abandoned serving God for serving the left-wing agenda long ago.

I guess separation of Church and state only applies to conservatives

The left should stick with atheism, it's more honest for them
Whenever I hear that the "religious left" has made a pronouncement of some kind I eagerly tune in to hear what it is. That is because there is endless entertainment value for the discerning connoisseur of the bizarre. Because if you want to hear convoluted "good is evil, black is white, right is left" reasoning there is no better source than those leftists who wrap themselves in the cloak of religiosity.
They do not disappoint this time around, from Front Page Magazine:
Religious Left activists, after nearly 40 years of silence, are finally speaking up about “religious freedom” in communist Cuba!
But their “religious freedom” concerns are focused exclusively on U.S. restrictions against their own junkets to Cuba. A delegation of leftwing church officials converged on Capitol Hill to lobby for a removal of all limits on travel to Cuba. The activists posed for a smiling photo with Congressman Charles Rangel of New York, who is proposing the travel ban removal.
A letter to members of Congress from 13 denominations and Religious Left groups complained, with no sense of irony, that U.S. travel restrictions on Cuba “"are unfair and inappropriate, restrain religious freedom and reflect undue governmental interference in the exercise of religion." For this crowd, religious liberty is only an important issue when it impinges on their own self-important activity. John McCullough, who heads Church World Service, which is the relief arm of the National Council of Churches, complained that U.S. travel policies on Cuba "have inconsistently limited religious travel by the broader church organizations, while readily approving more frequent visits by individual church congregations."
In the two years before the new 2005 restrictions on travel to Cuba began, the National Council of Churches (NCC) sent 33 delegations to Cuba. Now, the NCC is only to four trips per year to Cuba. If anything, sparing Cuban Christians the torment of dozens of NCC visits would seem to be an argument in favor of U.S. travel limits! But the Religious Left argues that the restrictions harm fellow Christians in Cuba.
I second the writer's suggestion that sparing the persecuted Cuban Christians the tedium and insult of a visit from a bunch of socialist hippies in clerical collars should be considered an act of kindness.

Shall they not both fall into the ditch?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders are urging President George W. Bush and Congress to take action against global warming, declaring that the changing climate is a "moral and spiritual issue."
In an open letter to be published on Tuesday, more than 20 religious groups urged U.S. leaders to limit greenhouse gas emissions and invest in renewable energy sources.
"Global warming is real, it is human-induced and we have the responsibility to act," says the letter, which will run in Roll Call and the Politico, two Capitol Hill newspapers.
"We are mobilizing a religious force that will persuade our legislators to take immediate action to curb greenhouse gases," it says.
The letter is signed by top officials of the National Council of Churches, the Islamic Society of North America and the political arm of the Reform branch of Judaism.
Top officials from several mainline Christian denominations, including the Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church and Alliance of Baptists also signed the letter, along with leaders of regional organizations and individual churches.
Rev. Joel Hunter, a board member of the National Association of Evangelicals, also signed the letter, though that group has not officially taken a stance on global warming due to opposition from some of its more conservative members.
What we have here is a bunch of apostate mainline denominations and one renegade Evangelical. With the exception of the Evangelical what all these organizations have in common is both a liberal political and religious outlook.
In John 14:6 Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." The use of the definite article indicates that he was saying that he was the only way, the only truth and the only light. The use of the exclusionary term "no one comes" indicates that the only access to the Father is through the Son, Jesus. Every one of those theologically liberal organizations rejects that exclusively which Christ considered a key part of his message (after all if there was another route for man to take to God then why should he have died upon the cross).
In the rejection of that fundamental truth they have also rejected their primary reason for existing as "Christians". In order to fill that gap left by the abandonment of the gospel they have sought out various messianic and millenarian political dogmas. They have heaped to themselves teachers to scratch their itching ears with stories of global warming, income inequality, racism and a host of other secular demons which can be fought in a secular parody of spiritual warfare (lacking only the Spirit).
These are blind guides knowing neither how to help one get to heaven nor how to improve the earth.

Hillbilly White Trash theater of the 'Net
Those of you who live in small town America and therefore lack the opportunity to go to the theater have doubtlessly been smiting your breasts in an agony of grief and frustration over the fact that you have been denied the chance to see the Vagina Monologues.
I sympathise with your agony, but until now I could do nothing to assist. However all that has changed. I can now offer you a window into a world of sophistication and intellectual refinement formerly open only to those in large cities and on college campuses. Thanks to the fine folks at Marquette University who saw fit to upload a clip from a recent performance of the Vagina Monologues performance at that worthy Jesuit center of higher learning.
Warning, Adult language:
Doubtless these disciples of Ignatius Loyola felt that the glorification of lesbian prostitution was an integral part of their mission to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have it not.
Don't forget to come back next week as I may be able to show you some highlights from their upcoming screening of film classic "Behind the Green Door", the movie which turned Marilyn Chambers into a star.
