Yes, if Hamilton had only been registered he couldn’t have shot anyone. Violent crime, especially home invasions, has skyrocketed in the UK since gun laws were made more restrictive in the wake of the Dunblane massacre. So, using the “I’ve sawed that board off three times and its still too short”, logic there is a push to make the laws even more draconian.BRITAIN could see another massacre like that at Dunblane a decade ago because of the failure to set up a national gun register, a police chief warned yesterday
As relatives of the victims prepared to mark today's tenth anniversary of the tragedy, Sir Chris Fox, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said complacency about our firearms legislation would be "foolish".
He said tightening gun laws had made a similar bloodbath "far more unlikely", but progress towards a national gun register had "not been as quick as it could be".
Sixteen children and their teacher were killed on 13 March, 1996 when Thomas Hamilton burst into Dunblane Primary School gym and opened fire, before shooting himself.
As Theodore Dalrymple says, “Oh, to be in England”.
From The Scotsman
For nearly 3 decades I've had a fascination with London. Some people get homesick and I get travel sick, yearning to stop by one old hotspot or another somewhere around the world, but all I hear from the UK is how ridiculous the laws have become and it disgusts me.
ReplyDeleteReceived an email some months back telling me of a burglary attempt in the neighborhood of a friend of mine. The neighbor caught a burglar in the act, and putting a cricket bat to good use was beating him about the head and shoulder area with great force and rapidity until a police car arrived. The cops dove into the fray and arrested the home owner for assault, then drove the man to the hospital and then home. Once in court, the home owner was told by a judge that he should have fled rather than resorted to violence, and that should this ever happen again he'd be looking at a lengthy prison term.
This was in a "good" neighborhood. Basically, the thugs know that the law protects them from harm and have taken to robbing domiciles when the owners are home, as it is far easier to force ones way past a partially opened door than breaking it down. No one answers their doorbells, or opens the door, even for friends past a certain hour.
But they got those evil guns off the street. From everyone but the criminals, of course.
A few years ago an American tennis player in London for a match was attacked by an armed robber on the tube. He sprayed the goblin with some kind of chemical spray (this might have been before pepper spray came along). He was arrested for the crime of acting in self defense.
