Easter is upon us.

This is the Church of The Holy Trinity, Episcopal, in Glendale Springs, NC. As you can see it is small and old. People come from all over the world to see this:

This fresco of the Last Supper was painted by Ben Long. Here are some details.

The figure in the doorway to the left is Judas going to collect his 30 pieces of silver.

The pastor of the church was the model for the servant seen leaving the room at the right. Note the basin and towel from the foot washing.

A fresco (the word is Italian for "fresh") is a painting done on wet plaster. The artist spreads only as much plaster as he can paint before it dries. The pigment soaks into the plaster and gives a softness and depth to the painting. As it dries small cracks will form in the plaster giving further texture to the finished work.

Here is a little closer look.

In the basement of the church is a collunarium with two more frescos.

This is Jesus saying goodby to his mother as he sets out on his earthly ministry. Things will never be the same for them. Until now they have been mother and son. Now they must be teacher and disciple, savior and sinner, God and worshiper. As he looks over her shoulder he sees a fellow carpenter, perhaps his brother James, carrying a beam and is reminded of his destiny.

Here is a close-up.

The final fresco is this one. It shows Mary Magdalene worshiping at Jesus' feet.

There is another small chruch called St. Mary's about 10 miles from this one with frescos of Christ on the cross, Mary, great with child and John The Baptist. I'll post picutes of them soon.
