A lesson for Lieberman

Bob Novak writes about the liberals who have turned their backs on Joe Liberman in order to back Ned Lamont. Among them are the people Novak terms "Ungrateful Greens":

The environmentalist lobby endorsed Sen. Joseph Lieberman against Ned Lamont and then abandoned him in his unsuccessful ConnecticutDemocratic primary election.

Giving Lieberman an all-time environmentalist voting record of 86 percent, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) designated him this year as an environmental champion." That won him endorsement for re-election from both the LCV and Defenders of Wildlife, but neither organization contributed television
ads or get-out-the-vote efforts.

Spokesmen for the environmentalist groups explained that they had other political commitments in 2006. However, sources said environmentalists so oppose Lieberman's support of President Bush's Iraq policy that they would not countenance their organizations assisting his campaign.

It should not take anyone by surprise that environmental activists are willing to throw a loyal friend of their movement overboard because he fails to follow the left-liberal line in a completely unrelated area. As Rush Limbaugh is so fond of pointing out, those who inhabit the liberal fever-swamp, whatever particular issue they espouse, are liberals first.

The National Organization of Women was created to promote women's rights and stand up for women's interests. Yet when a male president was credibly accused of forcibly groping a women in the oval office on one occasion and forcibly raping a woman in a hotel room on another occasion NOW stood up for HIM with what amounted to a "boys will be boys" defense.

Black "leaders" like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can be counted to oppose educational vouchers even though Black students suffer disproportionately from failing public schools and Black parents favor vouchers by an astronomical majority. To Jackson and Sharpton as well as the members of the Congressional Black Caucus it is more important to toe the liberal line than it is to rescue young Blacks from lives of ignorance, hopelessness, poverty, drugs, crime and violence.

Of course Greens will turn on Lieberman because he supports the war against the global jihad. Greens are first and foremost left-liberals and that means that their true enemy is the United States. For all but a small core of true-believer fanatics being an environmentalist isn't even about the environment. Their supposed concern for the environment is just a convenient club with which to beat the United States. Notice how all the prescriptions for what supposedly ails Mother Earth seem to involve impoverishing the United States?

Joe Lieberman is getting a hard lesson in what it means to be a modern Democrat. He has responded by leaving the Party to run as an independent. He has promised to caucus with the Democrats in the Senate if he is reelected. They will be only too happy to have him, but after what Democrats are putting him through I wonder how happy he will be to have them.
