The latest "scandal"

If you've been wondering why Democrats have gone into screaming hysterics over the dismissal of a handful of US attorneys here is the scoop. First remember that US attorneys are "at will" employees. They do not enjoy civil service protection and are not members of the public employee's union. The president has the right to remove any or all of them at any time for any reason which seems good to him at that moment. No fired US attorney has any more right to sue for wrongful termination than Donald Rumsfeld does.

Now against that backdrop why are Democrat members of congress falling to the ground in paroxysms of foaming madness over the removal of eight of them?

The dismissals took place after President Bush told Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales in October that he had received complaints that some prosecutors had not energetically pursued voter-fraud investigations, according to a White House spokeswoman.

Since the 2000 presidential election ended in dispute in Florida, Republicans have repeatedly raised concerns about possible voter fraud, alleging that convicted felons and other ineligible voters have been permitted to cast ballots to the benefit of Democrats.

You see they call themselves "Democrats" but they have no real faith in democracy. The fact is that they cannot get any of their agenda enacted by depending upon the will of the people express through their elected representatives. This is why they fought so hard resisting Mr. Bush's Supreme Court nominations. They must depend upon unelected judges to force their ideas down the throat of an unwilling nation by judicial decree.

Aware of their inability to win consistently through the democratic process Democrats have developed an election strategy which leans heavily upon various kinds of fraud. The primary kind of election fraud is packing large numbers illegal aliens and convicted felons who have lost their citizenship rights into the voting booths. This, BTY, is how Bob Dornan lost his House seat.

Beginning to get the picture? If you are Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid the last thing you want Ma and Pa Kettle turning on the evening news and seeing is half the Democrat caucus doing the perp walk between a phalanx of FBI agents.

So what do you do? Do you stop breaking the law and attempt to win elections on your merits? [I pause here to allow the hysterical laughter to subside] Seriously, what you do is what Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clinton taught you to do. You attack. You accuse the administration of doing something nefarious, hold hearings, demand administration officials resign and depend upon your house propaganda sheet (otherwise known as the mainstream media) to back you up.

And it helps if the Administration cringes, grovels, fires one or two people and holds press conferences apologizing and admitting that "mistakes were made". Which is exactly what the clueless Bush Administration has done. What Bush and his people should have done is take a lesson from Mr. Bill Clinton when he fired all 93 US attorneys upon his ascension to power. The reason for this was nakedly political. One of the prosecutors was conducting an aggressive investigation of the Clinton's financial dealings in Little Rock and another was days from handing down an indictment of Dan Rostenkowski, a critical Clinton ally in the House. The firing of the other 91 US attorney's was to provide cover and the whole thing was presented as a normal part of the transition between administrations (although it was in fact unprecedented).

The Clintons did not back down and they were not moved off of their transparent lie. And in a very short time the media and the public lost interest.

What Bush and his crew need to do is go before the microphones and say something like this: "Evidence exists which indicates that there is a systematic attempt to subvert the electoral process in this nation in order to steal elections for local, state and federal offices. This strikes a blow at the very principal of democracy and should not be tolerated at any time, especially when our brave armed forces are risking and in some cases sacrificing their lives on foreign battlefields to spread the blessings of democracy to other peoples. Voter fraud will be investigated vigorously and prosecuted zealously as long as I am president."

Bush is in the right. If he stands on that even a hostile media will not not be able to harm him. But it will require that he stand up and counterattack.
