Margaret Thatcher

The Scotsman's "Fact of the Day":

Margaret Thatcher became the first woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on this day in 1979. She was the longest serving Prime Minister in the 20th century, and remained until she resigned and was replaced by John Major in 1990. Thatcher stands with Churchill as one of the great leaders of the UK in the 20th century. She, along with Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II are responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union. The world owes her a debt that cannot be repaid and as the last living member of that trio she deserves veneration.
